No matter how careful you are with a habit of regular BMW service, you may occasionally find yourself with a dead battery. In these situations, you'll be glad you keep a pair of jumper cables in your trunk. Luckily, jump-starting a car battery can be easy with the right preparation.

Connecting

First, you will need help from roadside assistance or another friendly driver. Park the vehicles so their engines are facing each other, ensure both vehicles are off and open both hoods. Locate both batteries and remove any covering or case. Make sure to keep track of the negative and positive terminals: the red terminal is positive, and the black terminal is negative.

Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal on the booster vehicle. It may seem intuitive to connect the black cable to the negative terminal on both ends, but this can have dangerous side effects. It's safer to connect the cable to the working battery's negative terminal, then attach the other end to an unpainted metal surface on the other car's body.

Charging

Now that you're connected, start the working vehicle, then, start the car with the dead battery. If everything is hooked up properly, the second car should start after a few minutes of charging. Once it’s been running for a few minutes, remove the jumper cables in reverse order, removing the black clamp, then the red from your charging vehicle, followed by removing the black and then red clamp from the booster car battery. Let your BMW car run for about 15-20 minutes to make sure the battery is holding its charge.

If your car still doesn’t start, something else might be wrong with your engine. Clicking sounds can indicate a malfunctioning starter, and if your electrical system is working, you may have deeper engine issues.
