Our pre-owned and new BMW SUVs are popular with a variety of drivers, from parents to camping aficionados. One thing drivers often want to know is how our BMW SUVs compare to other models. Today, we’re taking a look at the 2022 BMW X3 and the 2022 Audi Q5 to see which comes out on top.
Powertrain and Performance
There are almost endless ways you could compare our BMW SUV and its Audi competitor, but we’ve chosen a few key areas we know from experience are important to drivers. Each model has three powertrain options, but the most powerful option can be found in the BMW X3. Its turbocharged six-cylinder engine generates as much as 503 horsepower and 479 lb.-ft. of torque with the right trim. By contrast, the top choice in the Audi SUV is a 3.0-liter V6 that can only produce 369 horsepower and 349 lb.-ft. of torque.
Reliability
The 2021 J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study ranked BMW models 12 spots higher than Audi vehicles in terms of initial quality. Plus, in this year’s Auto Issue, Consumer Reports ranked BMW vehicles as more reliable than Audi vehicles, based on subscriber surveys.
Safety
Both the BMW X3 and the Audi Q5 come with safety and driver-assist systems like forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. However, the BMW X3 includes active head restraints to protect drivers and passengers from whiplash, but there is no whiplash protection system in the Audi Q5.
The BMW model also includes a driver alert monitor, which recognizes when drivers aren’t paying attention. The Audi SUV does not offer a comparable system.
